Profile

Elizabeth Hoffman, Executive Vice President and Provost, received her B.A. in history from Smith College in 1968 and her M.A. and Ph.D. in history at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969 and 1972, respectively. She earned a Ph.D. in economics at California Institute of Technology in 1979. Hoffman held academic and administrative positions at the University of Florida, Northwestern University, Purdue University, the University of Wyoming and the University of Arizona. She served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University from 1993-1997. From 1997 to 2000, Hoffman served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago and from 2000 to 2005 she served as the 20th president of the University of Colorado (CU) system.

Teaching & Research

Hoffman's teaching and research interests include applied microeconomics, experimental economics, public choice, public economics, public policy, economic history, law and economics, and natural resource damage estimation techniques. She participated in the development of three new, now widely accepted, fields in economics: experimental economics, cliometrics, and behavorial economics. Dr. Hoffman has authored or co-authored three books and published over 40 refereed journal articles.

Service

Dr. Hoffman has received numerous distinctions, including the Ronald H. Coase Prize for excellence in the study of law and economics. She has served on more than 40 academic advisory councils, boards, and committees. In 2002 she was appointed to the National Science Board and chairs the Committee on Education and Human Resources.
