Academic Advising Awards

Awards Available:

ISU Award for Early Achievement in Academic Advising

Purpose: 

To recognize Iowa State faculty or professional staff who have demonstrated outstanding performance in advising Iowa State University undergraduate students or College of Veterinary Medicine professional students early in their professional careers.

Eligibility: 

Iowa State faculty or professional staff who have a minimum of two years and not more than five years of advising responsibilities for undergraduates or College of Veterinary Medicine professional students at the time of application. An advisor may receive the award, or its predecessor award, only once. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.

Nature of the award: 

$2,500 one-time stipend

Number of awards: 

Up to two

Criteria: 

Evidence of outstanding performance as an advisor, documented by student ratings of teaching, student letters of support, and/or supporting documentation of peers who work closely with the nominee.

ISU Award for Academic Advising Impact

Purpose: 

To recognize Iowa State faculty or professional staff who have continued to demonstrate outstanding performance in advising Iowa State University undergraduate students or College of Veterinary Medicine professional students throughout their professional careers.

Eligibility: 

Iowa State faculty or professional staff who have a minimum of five years of advising responsibilities for undergraduates or College of Veterinary Medicine professional students at the time of application. An advisor may receive the award, or its predecessor award, only once. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.

Guidelines for Submitting Nominations for University Academic Advising Awards

  1. Completed nomination cover page either for faculty or staff: 
  2. Nomination statement of no more than three (3) pages that includes the following:
    • Percentage of nominee’s time assigned to advising
    • Number of undergraduate or professional students the nominee is assigned to advise
    • Description of involvement in advising (including departmental, college, and university committees, as well as national advising organizations)
  3. Summary of advisor evaluation data
  4. Statement of advising philosophy of no more than two (2) pages prepared by the nominee
  5. Abbreviated vita of no more than four (4) pages
  6. Three (3) letters of support from students or peers who work closely with the nominee.
  7. When the file is prepared, nominators must submit their nominations to their college by the college deadline. When the college is ready to submit their nominations, the college awards coordinator must upload the nominations to the appropriate college folder on CyBox. If you do not have access to your college's folder on CyBox, please contact Kati Gorman, kati@iastate.edu.

Nominations are reviewed by the college before submission to the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost. Award recipients and their nominator, department chair, dean, or supervisor are notified by May 1. Colleges receive feedback on unsuccessful nominations by July 1.
