Guidelines for Submitting Nominations for Faculty Research Awards
The following guidelines apply to the outstanding career achievement, mid-career achievement and early achievement research awards for faculty. They are derived from experience in reviewing nominations in previous years, and are intended to help departments and colleges make their nominations as strong as possible.
- Follow Format and Electronic Submission Instructions

- The Career Achievement Award is designed to recognize faculty members with a career-long record of exceptional research/creative accomplishments. The Mid-Career Achievement Award recognizes mid-career faculty members who are or have great potential of becoming outstanding leaders in their areas of research/creative activity. The Early Achievement Award is to recognize a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in research and/or creative activity unusually early in his or her professional career.
- A key component to a good nomination packet is a synthesis of the nominee's accomplishments and their impact on the nominee's discipline. Begin with a statement of no more than three pages describing why this person deserves the award. Cite specific examples of relevant accomplishments, publications, patents, etc. and give examples of recognition that demonstrate the impact of these accomplishments on the nominee's discipline. Include all major accomplishments since the nominee's terminal degree. For nominees who have spent considerable time in non-academic positions prior to joining the academy, please describe their responsibilities and relevant accomplishments and recognition while in those positions.
- Include the nominee's current curriculum vita not to exceed 30 pages. It may be appropriate here to include a list of former students with information about their current employment or other research/creative activities.
- Include statements from the nominee's colleagues who are in a position to comment on her or his research/creative activity. Two or three such statements are sufficient.
- You must include letters from experts in the nominee's field at other institutions who are knowledgeable about the nominee's work and how it has been evaluated by peers. No more than three such letters are normally sufficient. Be sure to provide a short paragraph summarizing the qualifications of external references.
- Do not forget to discuss and include evidence of the nominee's impact on undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral associates. This is especially important for the Mid-Career and Career awards.
- The nominating letter should address the norms in the field for the numbers and types of publications expected. Please discuss the quality of the journals in which the nominee has published and include a list of the two to three most prestigious journals or publication venues in their field.
- Do not forget to discuss and document the nominee's success in grantsmanship (sources and amounts) and to discuss the norms for grantsmanship in the nominee's field.
- Also, do not forget to include a brief summary of the nominee's teaching and service activities.
Nominations originate in departments and are reviewed by the college before submission to the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. Recipients and their department chair and dean are notified in mid-April. Only nominators receive notice of unsuccessful nominations.
