ISU Award for Achievement in Economic Development in Iowa
Purpose:
To recognize faculty and staff members for outstanding ISU-based achievements in advancing the economic development of the state of Iowa.Eligibility:
Individuals or teams of A- or B-base faculty members and/or Professional and Scientific staff who have made an economic development contribution at ISU. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the Fall Convocation. Faculty and staff may only receive this award one time.Nature of the award:
$1500 one-time stipend, to be shared in the case of joint awards.Number of awards:
Two awards possible, for an individual staff member or faculty member or for a team. This award will not necessarily be awarded every year.Criteria:
Documented evidence of outstanding contribution to the economic development of the State of Iowa. Evidence of this contribution will include starting companies that have employed Iowa residents or had a significant positive impact on Iowa residents or providing specific documented support to Iowa companies that have resulted in economic gains for that firm.
ISU Award for Achievement in Intellectual Property
Purpose:
To recognize faculty and staff members for outstanding ISU-based achievements in producing intellectual property.Eligibility:
Individuals or teams of A- or B-base faculty members and/or Professional and Scientific staff who have made important IP contributions at ISU, preferably leading to patents and licenses. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the Fall Convocation. Faculty and staff may only receive this award one time.Nature of the award:
$1500 one-time stipend, to be shared in the case of joint awards.Number of Awards:
One award. This award will not necessarily be awarded every year.Criteria:
Documented evidence of outstanding contribution to the development of patentable discoveries. The significance of this intellectual property will be demonstrated by its being licensed and used by industries both within and outside of the state of Iowa. The success of this IP and the significance of the licensing should in part be documented by the resources that this IP returns to the university. For some IP, such as open source software that can not be patented or licensed, the nomination should demonstrate substantial national impact.
Guidelines for Submitting Nominations for Faculty/Staff Research and Economic Development Awards
The following guidelines apply to the achievement in economic development and intellectual property awards for faculty and staff. They are intended to help departments and colleges and other units make their nominations as strong as possible.
- Follow Format and Electronic Submission Instructions
- Complete a nomination cover page either for faculty or staff.
- A key component to a good nomination packet is a synthesis of the nominee's accomplishments. Begin with a statement of no more than three pages describing why this person or team deserves the award. The purpose of this statement is to persuade those reviewing the nomination that your candidate deserves the award. Cite specific examples and metrics of relevant accomplishments, publications, and recognition whenever possible. For the economic development award, focus on the impact of the nominee's development work. For the intellectual property award, focus on the impact of the nominee's IP development and the resulting licensing agreements and/or products derived from the IP.
- Include the nominee's current curriculum vita not to exceed 30 pages.
- For the economic development award only
- Include statements from the nominee's ISU colleagues who are in a position to comment on her or his economic development activity. No more than three such statements may be submitted. Since much of this work will likely be off campus, letters documenting those activities and the resulting economic consequence of those activities are particularly apropos.
- You must include letters from off campus experts in the nominee's field who are knowledgeable about the nominee's work, its impact, and how it has been evaluated by peers. No more than three such letters may be submitted. Be sure to provide a short paragraph summarizing the qualifications of external references.
- For the intellectual property award only the nomination packet may include up to six letters (either from ISU colleagues or from those external to the university) from those knowledgeable of the impact of the IP work. Be sure to provide a short paragraph summarizing the qualifications of any external references.
Nominations originate in departments, units, or centers and are due in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost on February 22, 2010. Nominations are reviewed by members of the Economic Development Council, who make recommendations to the Executive Vice President and Provost. Recipients and head of their unit are notified in mid-April. Only nominators receive notice of unsuccessful nominations.
