ISU Award for Departmental Leadership 2009-2010

Purpose: To recognize a department chair who has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities in advancing the faculty, staff, students, and programs in his/her department.

Eligibility: Current department chairs. Recipient must be an ISU employee at the time of Fall Convocation.

Nature of the Award: $1500 one-time stipend

Number of awards: One.

Criteria: Nominees should demonstrate leadership in advancing programs and initiatives central to the department; should create a department climate in which students, faculty, and staff can do their best work; should have a record of helping to advance the careers of faculty and staff; should respond effectively to student, faculty and staff issues and concerns; should represent the department well to the college, university, profession, and alums; should manage the day-to-day operations of the department efficiently; should provide leadership to the department in achieving departmental, college, and university goals; should have continued involvement in academic endeavors; and the strongest candidates will have had campus-wide impact. A chair may only win the award once.

Nomination process:

  1. Follow Format and Electronic Submission Instructions
  2. Complete the Faculty University Award Nomination cover page and include it as the first page of the nomination document (DOC) (PDF)
  3. Continue with a letter of nomination (no more than three pages); a letter of support from the dean and up to five additional letters of support (a letter from outside the department, as appropriate, is desirable); and a vita. Supporting materials are optional, but should be limited to no more than 10 pages.
  4. All department nominations should be forwarded to the college for review and submission to the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Selection Process: The Executive Vice President and Provost will appoint a committee composed of faculty and administrators to review the nominations and advise the Executive Vice President and Provost of its recommendations. Recipients and their dean are notified in mid-April. Only nominators receive notice of unsuccessful nominations.
