Guidelines for Academic Administrative Appointments
*Academic administrative appointments are those which include the titles dean, provost, department executive officer, department chair/head, as well as director when the unit is a part of the academic organizational structure.
When administrative appointments are made in an academic unit, the parameters of the agreement are recorded on the appointment form and delineated with greater detail in the Letter of Offer. The following matters should be addressed whether the appointment involves currently employed individuals accepting a new (or continuing) administrative assignment or individuals who are beginning employment at Iowa State. (DEO's should be included in discussion of #8 below)
- Title
- Start date
- End date
- Salary
- stated as a base salary (A or B base) and an administrative stipend
- Academic affiliation
- department(s), rank and tenure status
- Expectations
- general description of scope of responsibilities
- special expectations or designated tasks/goals
- Support
- start-up for labs; research support staff
- resources designated for program development & initiatives
- years covered by special resources
- professional development support
- relocation costs: personal and professional
- Conditions with respect to return to the faculty
- computation of salary as B-base (for A-base only)
- leave or special assignments if administrative duties cease and conditions (for example - 3 years of administrative service)
- use of annual leave (for A-base only)
- Terms
- reappointment restrictions if any
- date for formal review
- expectations for annual review
- General policies
- academic administrative appointments must be approved by the dean (where appropriate) and the provost
- tenure status is not affected by changes in administrative titles or duties
- academic administrative appointments are at the will of the appointer. Deans serve at the will of the President and Provost. Letters should contain language to this effect.
