Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost

Introduction

These guidelines provide information and suggestions for persons responsible for hiring new administrators at Iowa State University, as well as for members of search committees charged with making hiring recommendations. They reflect successful practices and procedures drawn from experience with administrative searches organized in, and staffed by, the Provost's Office at Iowa State University. Although they deal primarily with searches for administrators, they may be applicable to other searches as well.

Search committees should supplement these guidelines by consulting other materials governing hiring at ISU, including the Faculty Handbook, and the Search Procedures Guide prepared by the University Committee on Women. Search committee chairs may also want to consult procedural guides developed by ISU's Diversity Steering Committee, by individual ISU colleges, by University Extension, and by the Library.

Hiring officers and support personnel can provide copies of forms used by previous search committees as potential models. Each search committee will also need to decide what informational brochures describing the community of Ames, the university, and specific university organizations and units to make available to candidates during the recruitment and interview phases of the search process.

Many people have contributed to the content of this manual, especially Ardith Maney, Professor of Political Science and a former faculty intern in the Provost's Office; Carla Espinoza, Assistant Vice President for Human Resource Services and Director of Affirmative Action; and Faye Whitaker, Assistant Provost. Editorial advice was provided by Nancy Lewis, and Ruth Birch prepared the manuscript.
