ISU Award for Academic Advising Impact

Purpose: To recognize faculty or professional staff who have continued to demonstrate outstanding performance in advising Iowa State University undergraduate students throughout their professional career.

Eligibility: Faculty and professional staff recipients must have five years of advising responsibilities at the time of application and must be ISU employees at the time of the Fall Convocation.

Nature of the award: $1500 one-time stipend.

Number of awards: Two (one professional staff and one faculty).

Criteria: Evidence of outstanding performance as an adviser, as documented by student evaluations, student letters of support and/or supporting documentation of peers who work closely with the nominee.


ISU Award for Early Achievement in Academic Advising

Purpose: To recognize ISU faculty or staff who have demonstrated outstanding performance in advising undergraduate students early in their professional careers.

Eligibility: ISU faculty or staff who have a minimum of two years and not more than five years of work in academic advising undergraduate students at Iowa State University. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the Fall Convocation.

Nature of the award: $1500 one-time stipend.

Number of awards: One

Criteria: Evidence of outstanding performance as an adviser, documented by student evaluations, student letters of support and/or supporting documentation of peers who work closely with the nominee.


Guidelines for Submitting Nominations for University Academic Advising Awards

  1. Follow Format and Electronic Submission Instructions
  2. Complete a nomination cover page either for faculty or staff.

  3. In addition to citing reasons the person is being nominated for this award, the nomination statement should include the percentage of the person's time that is assigned to advising, the number of undergraduate students that the person is assigned to advise, and a description of the person's involvement in advising -- including departmental, college, and university committees as well as involvement in national advising organizations. The nomination should also include a summary of adviser evaluation data, as well as the nominee's statement of her or his philosophy of advising, and an abbreviated vita of no more than four pages.

Nominations are reviewed by the college before submission to the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. Recipients and their department chair and dean are notified in mid-April. Only nominators receive notice of unsuccessful nominations.
