Partial campus shutdown, changes to final exam schedule

December 15, 2021

I am writing to share several developments related to today’s forecasted severe weather event.

Partial shutdown beginning at noon

As communicated earlier this morning, Iowa State will partially shut down at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15.

Out of an abundance of caution, faculty, staff, postdocs and graduate assistants in the Division of Academic Affairs are encouraged to leave campus at noon and to work from home. Where possible, please reschedule in-person meetings to a virtual format and take other steps to keep yourselves and your families safe. I encourage supervisors to be flexible and supportive for those who may have longer commutes, or who need to pick up children from schools that are closing early, or who need to make changes for childcare or eldercare arrangements.

Final exams

Final exams scheduled for 12 p.m. or later on December 15 are rescheduled to Friday, December 17, at the same locations, according to the following schedule:

Original December 15 Exam Time

Rescheduled December 17 Exam Time

12 – 2 p.m.

12 – 2 p.m.

2:15 – 4:15 p.m.

2:15 – 4:15 p.m.

4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

7:30 – 9:30 a.m.

7 – 9 p.m.

9:45 – 11:45 a.m.

I recognize that rescheduling exams creates hardship and is a sudden development.  However, we must prioritize the health and safety of our campus community.

This change will be difficult for some students who have already made travel plans to depart campus for winter break. In the case of particularly burdensome conflicts (such as an airline ticket, for example), I encourage you to be understanding and empathetic, and offer an appropriate degree of flexibility. Options could include the assignment of an Incomplete grade, with the student taking the exam when they return to campus in January.  We will instruct students to reach out to their instructors in the case of unavoidable travel plans. Instructors are also encouraged to reach out to their students through Canvas as needed.

Please share this information as appropriate.

Thank you for all you do for Iowa State and our students.  I hope you, your friends, and families stay safe through this weather event, and are able to relax and recharge during winter break.

With best regards,

Jonathan Wickert
