Description

Purpose: To recognize faculty mentors who have exceeded the expectations of a mentor and to acknowledge the critical role that faculty mentoring plays at our institution.

Eligibility: 

  • Nominee: Current Iowa State faculty (tenure track or term) who serve or have served as a mentor to other faculty members (formal or informal). Department chairs/school directors and deans are ineligible to receive the Exemplary Faculty Mentor Award. These academic leaders are faculty mentors by virtue of their administrative positions and are encouraged to support all faculty members in the unit and work with each faculty member to ensure that they have the resources to succeed.
  • Nominator: Current Iowa State faculty (tenure track or term). Graduate students who wish to nominate professors are welcome to consider the Margaret Ellen White Award. Alumni and undergraduate students are excluded from nominating faculty for the award.

Nature of Award: Recipients will be honored at the annual Exemplary Faculty Mentor Recognition Reception on April 16, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the Cardinal Room of the Memorial Union.

Criteria:  Nominees should demonstrate a measurable impact on the success of their mentees by serving as exemplary role models, providing educational and networking opportunities, and providing feedback on performance and advancement. The mentor ought to have advanced the institutional statements of aspiration by cultivating skills and competencies in their mentees around research, life-long learning, forging new frontiers, and innovative solutions.

Guidelines for submitting a nomination:  

  1. Complete a nomination statement of no more than two (2) pages that includes the following:
    • How has your mentor created opportunities for growth and advancement?
    • How has your mentor provided constructive and meaningful feedback?
    • How has your mentor modeled good leadership?
    • How has your mentor shown their commitment to your success?
  2. Complete nominee/nominator form and upload the nomination statement into the form by February 28, 2026 (or the next business day).

Nominations are reviewed by the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost. Award recipients and their nominators, department chairs/school directors, and deans will be notified by March 15, 2026 (or next business day).
