Message to Faculty: Cancellation of classes due to Power Plant fire

Aug 24, 2023

As you know from today’s ISU Alert, a fire at Iowa State’s power plant has disrupted cooling capabilities on the university’s main campus, resulting in the cancellation of in-person classes for the remainder of Thursday, August 24, and all of Friday, August 25.

College of Veterinary Medicine courses and operations will continue as scheduled since their cooling systems are unaffected.

Faculty are to virtualize their courses, or cancel them if virtualization is not possible. This decision is to be made by the instructor, since some courses may not be easily virtualized, and some students may not have off-campus access to technology. Please keep your students updated via Canvas as to the status of your courses.

Please keep in mind that most main campus facilities will have no air conditioning and may be closed.

Faculty may work remotely through the end of this week.

This is an unfortunate emergency as we begin the fall semester. Thank you for your flexibility, and we will update you as more information becomes available.

Please share this message broadly with teaching, research, and administrative graduate assistants, or others with instructional duties.
